George Thorneloe (4 October 1848-3 August 1935〔"Obituary: Dr. George Thorneloe Former Metropolitan Of Ontario", The Times, 6 August 1935, p12〕) was a Canadian Anglican bishop at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.〔(DioceseofAlgoma (history) )〕 Thorneloe was born in Coventry, educated at Bishop’s College, Lennoxville〔(Project Canterbury )〕 and ordained in 1874.〔“Who was Who”1897-1990, London, A & C Black, 1991, ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 He was a missionary at Stanstead in Quebec Province until 1885 when he became Rector of St Peter's Sherbrooke.〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory", London, Hamilton & Co 1889〕 In 1896 he was elected Bishop of Algoma 〔The Times, 10 December 1896, p9, "Ecclesiastical Intelligence"〕 and in 1915 he also became Metropolitan of Ontario,〔(Anglican bishops of Canada )〕 positions he held until 1927.〔The Times, 24 September 1926, p12, "Canadian Archbishop Resigns"〕 A village in rural Ontario is named after him.〔(Rural Routes )〕 ==References==
